This silver
gelatin print is over 70 years old and has suffered severe fading
and considerable base stain and yellowing. It was mounted on a
piece of thin cardboard, and over the years it has been flexed and
cracked repeatedly. A large section is missing from the lower left
corner, and small pieces are missing throughout the
picture.
Restoration
consisted of, first, restoring the overall tonal range and neutral
color of the print and, second, eliminating the stain from the
white areas. Then local repairs were done to eliminate the cracks
and fill in the small missing sections. Finally, the large missing
corner was replaced with grass cloned from other parts of the
picture.
(Time to
restore: approximately four hours.)
